On 4 February 1973, the Eyre Highway provoked one of its stranger encounters when a nurse and her boyfriend were driving towards Kimba in South Australia. They observed an orange rectangular glow in a field beside the road which seemed to contain a large white figure of humanoid appearance. The image resembled a person standing in a non-existent doorway. The couple accelerated past, but did look back to see that the glow now seemed to extend right across the road.
Excellent investigation by UFO Research Australia was able to confirm this experience. It was reported to police, who also went back to the location with the frightened witnesses that same night. It was a long journey back, but because of their obvious sincerity, the police were willing. Two other vehicles were on the road at the same time – a car and a truck driven by a man from Ceduna. Both were traced and both report seeing something similar in the field. Despite its peculiar nature, an almost identical case occurred around the same time near Sheffield in Britain amidst the Pennine window.
